Samsung Galaxy Tab and Toshiba Folio 100 handled

Android News - 03 Sep 2010 - Google Android - By Leigh Geary

There's a good video on the BBC website which takes a look at the new 7" Samsung Galaxy Tab we covered yesterday. There's a hands-on and a wry smile from Carey McGregor (Senior Product Manager at Samsung) when BBC reporter Rory Cellan-Jones states, "It looks lovely, but it looks just like a shrunken iPad though".

The Folio 100, from Toshiba, is also shown and comes with Android 2.2, Flash 10.1 support and a miniHDMI port. It can boot in just 30 seconds (thanks to the Nvidia Tegra 2 CPU) and has a 10" 1024x600 resolution screen. It has 7 hours of battery life, SD card reader, 1.3MP camera and more. Strangely Toshiba show it viewing a video promoting the iPad :)

Samsung cautious about Windows Phone 7

WinMo News - 03 Sep 2010 - Windows Phone - By Leigh Geary

Last month we spotted a Samsung prototype running Windows Phone 7. Samsung are confirmed as hardware partners for the new OS alongside LG, HTC, Asus and Dell. However, after Motorola decided not to take part it's a little worrying to see Samsung now stating that the new Windows Phone 7 Operating System only has "...some professional, specialized demand..".

There is perhaps some confusion on the target market as the new Windows Phone OS is aimed squarely at consumers, not just the business / professional category. Speaking just a day after the OS was finished, YH Lee, Head of Marketing at Samsung Mobile, also stated..

“We are Prioritizing our Android platform. Android is very open and flexible, and there is a consumer demand for it.”

Only one Samsung handset is slated to run Windows Phone 7 currently. We're assuming that Samsung are just being cautious as Windows Phone 7 has no sales figures currently.

WinMo News - 02 Sep 2010 - Handsets - Samsung (Android) - By Leigh Geary

Details of the Samsung Galaxy Tab are now available following the launch at IFA. The dedicated site now contains a lovely video showing it being handled whilst someone walks around. The specs sheet contains HSUPA / HSDPA tri-band connectivity, quad-band GSM, WiFi (a/b/g/n), Bluetooth 3.0 and DLNA too. The Tab has a 7" WSVGA screen working at 1024x600 and packs Android 2.2 (FroYo) with Android Market (and Samsung apps, Swype and a document editor called ThinkFree for good measure).

There's couple of cameras - a 3 megapixel auto-focus shooter with LED flash and a 1.3 megapixel camera for video calls plus a 4000mAh battery which will give you a full 7 hours of "movie play". The Samsung UI has "hybrid widgets" and there's SMS, emaikl, IM, integrated calendars plus multiple homescreens. It's all powered by a 1GHZ processor with PowerVR SGX540. Strangely I still can't login with Peep. HTC have now followed up with this Tweet which states..

Can you guys use Peep now? Do let me know..

Update - Nope, looks like it's still blocked.

T-Mobile G2 (Desire Z) to have 800MHz CPU

Android News - 02 Sep 2010 - Handsets - HTC (Android) - By Leigh Geary

If you're a regular reader then you'll have probably seen the photos and you'll know that the US T-Mobile G2 will be the HTC Desire Z here in Europe. The Desire Z was also known as the HTC Vision and we had specs posted online too. Now there's a little more detail thanks to the T-Mobile Scoop website, which details a Scorpion CPU and Android 2.2.

That Scorpion CPU only operates at 800MHz, but there is 4G HSPA+ technology to make it the "fastest smartphone experience in America".

HTC F8181 - Brew-based handset on the way to AT&T

General News - 02 Sep 2010 - Other Smartphones - By Leigh Geary

Whilst we're not really "into" the Qualcomm Brew-based phones, they're helping to bring Smartphone-like functionality top more people with the help of a bargain-basement price. The HTC Smart was rolled onto o2 here in the UK after a big announcement at Mobile World Congress and it looks like a similar handset is now on the way to AT&T in the US.

This is called the HTC F8181 (at least, for now) and you can get another shot on the link below. No specs or costs as yet.

The Apple Announcement - Updated devices, more services

iPhone News - 02 Sep 2010 - iPhone - By Leigh Geary

Apple launched quite a bit of stuff yesterday. New versions of the iPod Nano and Shuffle were announced, as was a new "social network for music" called "Ping". Although Apple boss Steve jobs would beg to differ, many are stating that the new social network will further diminish any remaining MySpace market share. Apple also has the benefit of the largest online music service with over 12 billion tracks downloaded to date.

Apple TV, which has been around for some time, has been updated but this time we'll only allow renting of content. All shows will be in HD although initially shows from Fox and ABC will be available.

One strong point of the new Windows Phone 7 platform will be the XBox 360 games and integration. However, Apple also took the chance to promote their new "Game Center" system for multiplayer gaming action on the iPhone, iPad and iPod. It'll be built into the tools available to developers of iOS apps.

Apple are getting their fingers in more pies. Social media, computers, MP3 players, phones, TV and gaming. They're becoming an even bigger force in the industry.

Windows Phone 7 - It's ready to roll

WinMo News - 01 Sep 2010 - Windows Phone - By Leigh Geary

Slap bang in the middle of a rather large Apple event came this Tweet from the boys at Windows Phone. The news is that Windows Phone 7 has gone "gold" with the RTM (release to manufacturing) of the OS. There's still some "final integration" to get everything hooked into each device but they're confident that this is the "most thoroughly tested mobile platform" that Microsoft have ever released.

Oh, and there's some even better news. Since the Technical Preview they've managed to crow-bar in some extra design tweaks and Facebook improvements to select which contacts should be in the main contact list.

There's also a comment which we really don't know how to "take"...

“"Today’s milestone is exciting not just because of what we’ll deliver to customers later this year, but how it sets us up for success over the long term in the mobile space… we’re really just getting started."”

Started? That kinda reminds us of something Terry said back in June“"I think about this really as a first release, a first release for this team. If I had more time, I'm not sure that would make the top 10 list of things."”

I don't know about you, but that says to me, "Hey, be kind, don't expect to much, it's our first go". Thoughts?

HTC Acknowledge Peep problems

General News - 01 Sep 2010 - General Software - By Leigh Geary

Earlier the HTC Twitter client, HTC Peep, ground to a halt after Twitter turned off their standard authentication system. The new OAuth system was announced by Twitter in December and the actual "go" date was pushed back as clients were updated to use the new login API. Late yesterday the Peep client packed up and, after a fairly major web explosion, it seems that every HTC device is having the same issue.

HTC are aware of the problem and now we're seeing a few comments on Twitter by Mark Moons. Mark works for HTC Europe and has just posted a couple of Tweets which (after a little translation) state..

“ "Hi All, HTC is currently investigating the reported issues with HTC Peep and Friend Stream ... We'll keep you informed"”

Mark surprisingly mentions that Seesmic is a good alternative. Now, just to add some balance to this. Yes, this is pretty bad and HTC seem to be getting quite a bit of flack at the minute. Just a few days ago HTC yet again got blamed for delayed OS updates and now it appears that no-one realised OAuth was about to go live. There are, at least, other clients you can download and HTC do respond to problems like this, plus let's not forget that other Twitter clients have been affected by this change, so HTC aren't alone. We'll keep you posted as things progress.
